ECOMMERCE DESGIN MISTAKES TO AVOID

The present pandemic situation has paved the way for ecommerce to grow tremendously. With over 190 million of the population shopping exclusively online, statistics state that the numbers are likely to increase by 2022 January.

Building an ecommerce platform is no easy task. It has its own set of challenges.

 

This blog talks about some design mistakes that you might want to avoid, that could impact your platform, overall.

 

VAGUE UNDERSTANDING OF YOUR PRODUCT AND TARGET AUDIENCE:

• Answering the question – what people want?, would help you get a clarity and an understanding of your product and the way it should be presented to the world. 

• There is no such thing as assumption. 

• Do good research about the needs and wants of your target audience, keeping in mind their likes and dislikes, preferences etc.,

• Ensure that your ecommerce platform is ready to cater to a large audience.

 

CONFUSING AND LENGTHY CHECKOUT PROCESS:

• Data states that over 28% of shoppers abandon their shopping carts as they find that the checkout process is winding and confusing them.

• Try to make the checkout process as seamless as possible.

• Design the checkout page in such a way that it offers hassle free shopping for customers and does not contain complicated steps and procedures to follow.

• A good checkout page should contain the order details and billing on the same page and make sure that you provide payment options ready – be it UPI/Cards/COD etc.

 

USE OF LOW-QUALITY PRODUCT IMAGES AND DESCRIPTIONS:

• As it happens, many ecommerce platforms use low gradient images and poor product descriptions.

• Gone are the days when people buy products off the shelves! People have turned health conscious and they are quite knowledgeable about what goes in a bottle of shampoo/health drink.

• Make sure you get the product descriptions right. 

• It is mandatory that products have descriptions and perfect images that are of the highest image quality as possible.

 

POOR NAVIGATION TO FIND THE RIGHT PRODUCT:

• Design your ecommerce platform in such a way that its less confusing as possible.

• Devise your categories systematically so that customers are able to filter seamlessly.

• Regardless of the information provided in your platform such as – shipping details, payments, returns and refunds, a good landing page makes it easier for customers to navigate and find products.

• To reach out to your target audience, creating proper landing pages is a must, if you want your platform to succeed.

 

COMPLICATED REGISTRATION PROCESS AND NO GUEST LOGIN:

• A good ecommerce platform should be simple yet inviting enough for customers to share their details. 

• A simple registration form should contain basic information such as –  Name, mobile number, email id, username and password.

• Apart from the above-mentioned details, make way for your platform to have a guest login as well, so that customers are given the option to use their Google credentials to login.

 

UNRESPONSIVE DESIGN:

• Data states that over 77% of shoppers use their mobile phones for shopping.

• An unresponsive platform cannot be used to attract customers. Make sure that you incorporate design elements that are responsive and provide customers the freedom they need to use the platform as freely as they could.

• Furthermore, you are bound to lose customers if the design is unresponsive and bland.

• Irrespective of the screen size, whether customers use an iPhone/Tablet/smartphones or iPads, your platform should have the capability to adjust to the screens accordingly and offer a wonderful user experience.

 

NOT DISPLAYING REVIEWS OR SOCIAL PROOF:

• To ensure a solid customer base, you must be able to maintain engaging social media pages, that interacts with customers.

• You can choose to integrate social media pages and see the inflow of traffic increase gradually.

• It is always a good practice to include reviews, feedbacks and testimonials. 

• Make sure to display positive as well as negative reviews, as customers are likely to go through reviews and then make the final purchasing decision.

 

LACK OF A CLEAR AND UNCOMPREHENSIBLE CTA:

• Most ecommerce platforms consider CTA as an opportunity to entice customers.

• But if you lack the clarity to provide a good CTA, your platform will not be able to attract your target audience.

• CTAs can be used to get customers to follow you on social media, make additional purchases, sign up for your newsletter, check out the blog section, watch out for sales or discounts, etc.,

• Keep your CTA to the point, by using simple language.

 

To sum up, the above points indicate the common mistakes and the steps required to correct them. 

To maintain a user-friendly ecommerce platform, you must be able to understand the needs and wants of your customers and not pave way for their frustrations at not finding products of their choice.
